Russian disinformation in Central and Eastern Europe

2016-12-25

Following the Russian annexation of Crimea and the subsequent hybrid war in Eastern Ukraine, pro-Russian propaganda intensified to a record-high level in Central and Eastern Europe. Easily digestible pro-Kremlin content built on fake news, disinformation, conspiracy theories, anti-Western sentiment and, sometimes, plain lies is being spread in social media virtually unopposed, often finding its way into mainstream media as well. To unveil these efforts, Political Capital, the Slovakian Globsec Policy Institute and the Czech European Values Think Thank launched a bi-weekly disinformation monitor to bring the public’s attention to the distortions of Russian propaganda.
